MacBook keyboard repair

Sticking keys, letters doubling up, keys that don't register at all. On the butterfly-mechanism years it was endemic; on newer machines it's usually a spill or heavy use.

The keyboard is riveted into the top case, so this is more involved than it looks — which is exactly why workmanship matters here.

Symptoms

What you'll be seeing

  • Keys repeating, doubling, or not registering
  • Sticky or mushy keys since a spill
  • A key cap missing or a broken mechanism
  • Backlight dead under some keys
Important

If a spill is involved

I spilled coffee and now keys stick. Just the keyboard?

Not necessarily, and this matters. Liquid runs past the keyboard onto the board underneath, so we check for corrosion down there too. Replacing only the keyboard on a corroded board is how people end up paying twice.

Can you fix just one key?

Sometimes — if it's the cap or the mechanism, that's a small job. Widespread failure or spill damage usually needs the keyboard. We'll tell you which yours is.
