MacBook won't turn on

No chime, no fan, no display. Apple's answer is a logic board replacement, priced close to what the machine is worth.

There's a second reason to repair rather than replace here: on modern MacBooks the storage is soldered to that same board. Replace the board and your files go with it.

What yours does

Any of these?

  • Completely dead — no fan, no light, no chime
  • Fan spins but nothing appears on screen
  • Powers on for a second and shuts off
  • It died after a spill, a surge, or a bad charger
The important one

About your files

My files are on it and there's no backup.

Then say that first. Even where a board can't be economically repaired, we can very often recover the data from it — but only if we know that's the goal before we start.

Apple said the logic board needs replacing. Is there an alternative?

Usually. A replacement swaps the whole board because that's the process. Component repair fixes the specific failure and keeps the storage that's soldered to it.

What it costs to find out

The honest bit about pricing

Most repairs have a price you can get online in seconds. This one doesn't, because nobody can tell you what a dead board needs without opening it — and a shop that quotes you a number over the phone is guessing.

So the diagnostic is $45, and it comes off the price of the repair if you approve it. If you decide not to go ahead, you've paid $45 for a real answer about your device instead of a guess.

Timing: most repairs leave the same day, port work included. Faults like this one are the exception — they have to be traced before they can be quoted, so it is usually one to three days.

Been near liquid at any point? Say so — it changes where we look first, and water-damage repair explains what that job involves.
