What you might be seeing

  • Cracked glass or an obviously damaged panel
  • Vertical lines, blotches, or a black band
  • Backlight dead — you can see a faint image with a torch
  • It flickers, or cuts out at certain hinge angles
Catch this one early

A bright band along the bottom

If you're seeing an uneven bright strip along the bottom of the screen, or the backlight cuts out unless the lid is at a particular angle, that's the display flex cable wearing through from opening and closing. It's well known and it gets worse.

Caught early it's a smaller job than a full panel, which is the only reason we're mentioning it here rather than waiting for you to ask.
