Xbox won't read discs

Grinding when it loads, spitting discs straight back out, or refusing to take one at all.

Laser, belt or loaderStuck discs removed intactSeries X and Xbox One Most repairs same day

It's a mechanical fault with a mechanical fix — usually a tired laser, a slipped belt, or something jammed in the loader.

Symptoms

What it's doing

  • Disc goes in and comes straight back out
  • Grinding or clicking as it tries to load
  • Reads films but not games
  • There's a disc stuck inside
Two things worth knowing

Before you try anything

There's a disc stuck. Can I pull it out?

Please don't. Forcing it is what turns a stuck disc into a scratched disc and a bent loader — and then you're paying for both. Bring it down as it is.

It reads films but not games.

Very common, and it tells us something useful: game discs are denser and ask more of the laser, so they fail first as it weakens. It's a good early warning rather than a mystery.

What we do

How the repair goes

  1. Work out whether it's the laser, the loader or the drive board.
  2. Get any jammed disc out without scratching it.
  3. Repair or replace whatever's actually failed.
  4. Test with both a game and a film before it goes back.
