It's a part. We replace it. What we don't do is widen the deadzone in software and send you away calling it fixed, because that comes back in a fortnight.
What drift actually is
Why recalibrating never sticks
Inside each stick there's a small sensor that wears with use. Once it's worn it reports movement when the stick is centred — that's the drift. Recalibrating just tells the console to ignore a wider band around centre, which hides it for a week or two while the wear carries on.
Replacing the module is the actual repair. Sticks are wear items, so a heavily used pad will eventually wear a new one too, but you're back to normal in the meantime.

- Confirm it's mechanical wear and not a calibration problem.
- Replace the stick module at board level.
- Check the triggers, bumpers and battery while it's open.
- Recalibrate and play something before it goes back.

Both sticks drift. Is that two repairs?
One job. If both modules are worn we do both while it's open — we're not charging you twice to open the same controller.
Will the adaptive triggers still work?
Yes. We check them while we're in there, and if a trigger has gone slack we'll tell you what that needs.
