PS5 won't read discs

Grinding, refusing to pull a disc in, or spitting everything back out. Usually a tired laser, a slipped belt, or something jammed in the loader.

One thing worth knowing: on a PS5 the drive is paired to the console's board. You can't just drop a second-hand drive in — it has to be re-paired, and that's the step most DIY attempts miss.

Symptoms

What it's doing

  • Disc goes in and comes straight back out
  • Grinding or clicking when it tries to load
  • Films play but games won't read
  • There's a disc stuck in there and it won't come out
Two things people get wrong

Before you try anything

There's a disc stuck. Should I pull it out?

Please don't. Forcing it is what turns a stuck disc into a scratched disc and a bent loader. Bring it in as it is.

Can't I just buy a drive off eBay?

Not on a PS5. The drive is paired to your console's board, so a donor unit has to be re-paired to work. That's the bit that catches people out.

It plays films but not games. Is that odd?

Not at all — game discs are denser and ask more of the laser, so they're the first thing to fail as it weakens.
