That's drift — a worn stick module telling the console about movement that isn't happening.
We replace the module. That's the repair. Recalibrating just widens the dead zone so you don't notice it for a fortnight while the wear carries on.
Why calibration doesn't hold
The difference between hiding it and fixing it
Inside the stick there's a small sensor that wears down with use. Once worn, it reports movement while the stick is sitting still. Recalibration tells the console to ignore a wider band around centre — the drift is still there, you just can't see it yet.
Two weeks later the wear has moved past the new dead zone and you're back where you started. Replacing the module is the actual fix.

My Switch Lite drifts. Can that even be fixed?
Yes. The sticks are inside the console rather than detachable, so it's a strip-down, but it's the same repair and it's routine.
Can I bring just the Joy-Cons?
Yes, that's fine — leave the console at home if you like.
