Switch battery replacement

If it only lasts an hour undocked, or dies the moment you take it off the dock, the cell is worn out. Cheap fix for a console that's otherwise perfectly good.

Symptoms

Time for a battery when…

  • Handheld playtime has dropped right off
  • It dies as soon as you undock it
  • It won't hold charge overnight while switched off
  • The back cover or screen is starting to lift

What handheld time you should actually expect

A healthy Switch gives you somewhere between two and six hours undocked, and the spread is enormous depending on what you're playing. A demanding 3D game will flatten it in a couple of hours; a 2D indie title will go all afternoon.

So before deciding the battery is finished, think about what you were playing when it died. If a light game only gets you an hour, that's a worn cell. If a big game does, that might just be the game.

Two things

Worth knowing

The console looks slightly bulged.

Stop charging it and bring it down. A swelling cell pushes the screen off the frame and can vent — that's the one we'd rather you didn't leave.

Will handheld time go back to new?

Roughly, yes. It still depends what you play — a demanding game drains any battery faster than a 2D indie title.

Barely lasts an hour?

A new cell is cheap and it makes handheld mode usable again.
